Our Softer, Easier-to-clean Mat Surface

  
In March of 2002, we introduced a "NEW and improved" WONDERMAT® Sport Series surface texture that we called "Basket Weave" for obvious reasons.

This is our second texture change, and this one was driven by our Martial Arts customers, who had been asking us to make a better surface for many years. Density and surface texture are important in martial arts matting, since standing stability is a must, and the ability to stick to the mat, yet turn easily are essential attributes of any good fighting surface.  The original net embossing was reasonably OK, but it has a tendency to be somewhat coarse if not foamed perfectly.  The switch to Rhombus embossing in 1998 was a big improvement in the speed of the mats and cleanliness , but it turned out to be too slick for some disciplines.  The change to our Basket Weave texture in 2002 has definitely satisfied our Martial Arts customers, and it has proven to be a good surface for general use in a wide range of applications.  One thing is for sure - A lot of companies have copied it.

As has happened here often over the years, the opinions of our customers prevail to make a better product.

We changed the texture, not the interlock style or thickness.
