TILE SIZES

One Meter mats seem to have become the Internationally accepted standard tile size for puzzle type Sport mats, and Wondermat has adopted 1 Meter as our primary tile size for thicker matting products.  This is the main tile size that we stock, but we will continue to support the 3 Foot tile size for existing and new customers on a made-to-order basis.  The largest COATED tile that we can make right now is 3 Foot.  If you are interested in a different tile size, please call us.

MAT THICKNESS

How thick of a mat do you really need? Our Sport and Safety mats are available in 3/4 or 1 Inch thick models, and our Standard Series mats come standard at 5/8 inch thick.   The two main things to consider when deciding on which thickness to use are the type of activity the mat will be used for and the weight of the participants.

5/8 inch thick mats are fine for most adult exercise activities that do not involve falls, throws or other potential hard impacts that could involve the head, shoulders, hips, knees or elbows. It is also adequate for most activities involving small children and no climbing equipment.  We'd love to sell you a bunch of thick mats, but that's the truth.

3/4 and 1 inch thick mats provide more impact absorption, and are suitable for more vigorous activities.  Smaller people and simpler activities should use the 3/4 inch thick mats and bigger people doing more intense activities should use the 1 Inch thick mats.

THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAT:  Some internet companies, who sell similar mats insist on advertising that a 20MM mat is 7/8 inches thick.  One company even calls it 1 inch on the first page and 7/8 inch on the order page and when it gets to your house it's 3/4 of an inch.   Our calipers say the 20mm is closer to 3/4 inches.  To call a 20mm mat 7/8th inches thick is dishonest, and the companies calling 20mm 1 inch are just flat out lying to you.  Because of this situation on the Internet, we strongly suggest that you get samples of any "7/8 Inch" or "1 Inch" thick mats and measure them for yourself.  It's no mistake that we have been here 10 Years.

How do you determine the shock absorbency of a surface?  You drop metal heads stuffed with computers on them and get data on two basic things:  At what rate did the head slow down upon contact with the surface (peak deceleration) and how much time did it take to bottom-out?  This is all very technical, but both of these numbers are influenced by foam density, elasticity and thickness.  The thickness of a mat is irrelevant if you don't consider the underlying quality of the foam. It's completely possible to engineer a 3/4 inch thick high density foam that has more impact absorbance for an adult body weight than a 3 inch thick low density foam.  So don't just look at the thickness of a mat.  If the foam is too hard it won't help your head no matter how thick it is, and if it's too soft for your weight, you'll just "bottom-out" too quickly on a hard fall.

MADE-TO-ORDER

If you are doing a large dojo or other studio, we can ensure that all of your material comes from the same foam batch.  If we don't have enough of one color from a single batch for your mat, we will run enough new foam to make your entire mat.  This ensures that there are no major color variations in your mat due to mixing and no thickness variations due to atmospheric conditions on the day the foam is created.  The end result is a better product and it won't cost you a penny more.  You just have to plan ahead if you are doing a very large installation, which is the norm in most commercial installations anyway.  Call for details.

CUSTOM CUTTING

While it's quite easy to cut our Standard Series 5/8 inch thick tiles with a common utility knife, the thicker mats in our Sport Series can only be cut with common cutting tools if you make two passes. This is because it's almost impossible to find a blade sharp enough that is 3/4 inches or longer.  If it's up against a wall, a double cut edge won't matter because people won't see it.  On a leading edge that people see, you might want to let us cut it for you with special cutting equipment that we have in-house that can handle these thicker tiles.  There is a small fee to help pay for the blades our equipment uses, but it's much safer and the final result is straight and clean.  Call if you want us to cut tiles for you.
