INSTALLING WONDERMAT SOFT FLOOR TILES IN 4 EASY STEPS |
Proper Product Selection and installation plays a key role in the performance of Wondermat Flooring:
CAUTION: If room is heated by radiant coils in the sub-floor, temperature of the sub-floor should not exceed 85 f.
You placed your order and it has finally arrived. You're standing in the middle of your room surrounded by boxes of Wondermat. What do you do now?
STEP 1: PREPARE THE SUB-FLOOR
You should inspect and prepare the surface that you are going to install Wondermat on. As a general rule, wood, tile, linoleum, concrete or other hard smooth surfaces are all suitable. The surface should be clean, dry and relatively smooth. Sand, dirt or dust below the mat may cause the assembled mat to slide, so cleaner is better. If installing over wood, make sure there are no nails sticking up. To speed your installation, completely clear the area where your new Wondermat will be installed.

STEP 2: INSTALL THE FULL TILES
SIMPLE INSTALLATION:
In a simple area-mat installation, you just lay out the tiles to the desired length and width according to your design. Position any letter, number or picture elements as you go along.
CUSTOM INSTALLATION:
In a wall-to-wall type installation, you simply lay out all the full tiles you can according to the plan you made in our Design Center without running into obstacles. With that done, you will position the partially assembled mat in the center of the room. You may have to remove a couple of tiles in the middle of the room to give yourself a place to stand while repositioning the mat. Use your tape measure to make sure you have the mat as centered as possible by measuring from the edge of the tiles to the wall. Don't push the interlocking tabs up against the wall. Make sure to leave enough space for the borders.
STEP 3: INSTALL THE BORDER TILES
SIMPLE INSTALLATION:
In a simple area-mat installation, just work your way around the mat using Wondermat pre-cut border tiles on all of the straight edges.
CUSTOM INSTALLATION:
In a wall-to-wall type installation, you begin by blocking in your main tile area by cutting two border tiles on opposite ends of each wall. This step assures that the main mat is in the correct place and does not move out of position while the bulk of the borders are installed. Before you cut anything, double check the positioning of main mat with the tape measure one more time. Then stand back from your mat and look at how the lines are running. Does it look straight? Reposition as needed.
To make custom border tiles, you will begin with a full tile and cut it to the correct length. To mark the line you will cut on, position the tile you are going to use exactly on top of the last whole tile near the wall. Then, push a third tile on top of this one to about 1/16 inch from the wall. Place a metal ruler on top of the tile to be cut, and slide it up against the edge of the top tile. This is the line that you cut. Move the top tile out of the way and use your fine point pen to draw a faint line using the ruler as a guide. Move the tile over to the piece of wood you are using for cutting and, using the metal ruler as a guide, cut a straight line across the foam to create your border piece. Put the cut piece in place and move on to the next full width border. Just repeat this process on each full length, saving any border that requires more than one cut for the last step. When you are done it should look something like this.
STEP 4: INSTALL THE CORNER TILES
SIMPLE INSTALLATION:
In a simple area-mat installation, just snap the four corners on the mat and your are done. Position you mat where you like it and enjoy.
CUSTOM INSTALLATION:
If you are doing a wall-to-wall type installation, you have at least four corners to complete, and probably some other irregular areas to deal with. Start with the simpler 90 degree corners first: Set the depth of the border you are going to cut in the same way you did for the straight borders. Cut the tile to the correct width. To cut the corner to the correct length, flip the tile on its back, with the straight edge against the wall, and mark the tile at two points where the interlock is deepest. Bring the edge piece over to your cutting area and place the metal ruler across the two points. Mark it and cut it. It should fit perfectly.
