TECHNIQUE: FITTING A MAT TO AN "L" SHAPED ROOM

Making a mat fit into an "L" shaped room or basement, or just wrapping your mat around a corner, can seem tricky on paper, and counting tiles and trying to do metric conversion is no fun at all. The solution? Using our Make-a-Mat calculator to handle the math, and the steps outlined below, you should find this type of installation is fairly easily accomplished. Here's how to do it:

Measure your room and divide the "L" shape into two distinct rectangles. Write down the measurements of each rectangle for later use.

Example: Rectangle 1 = 12 x 10 feet Rectangle 2 = 10 x 16 feet

Use the Make-a-Mat calculator to determine how many tiles and borders are needed to fill each rectangle. Use the "exact-fit" method in the calculator, and pick width and length options that require at least 1 inch of trim for each rectangle. You have to think a bit here. Look at the pictures in Steps 3 to 5 for an idea of what the goal is before you go into the calculator.

Since each individual rectangle will be slightly oversized from the Make-a-Mat calculator, when the tiles from the two separate rectangles are combined, you will have more than enough material to complete the job.

During installation you want to get two square, straight edges against the two longest walls first. With that done, you will fill in the bulk of the tiles to the point that a full tile will no longer fit. At this point, you can see how you have bridged the two rectangles into a single mat.

With the bulk of your mat installed, the last job is to make sure your mat is positioned correctly against the opposing walls and start measuring and cutting the remaining tiles into place. Cut a few random borders around the room to lock the mat in place, then just take your time measuring and cutting the remaining tiles into place.
