Your Wondermat® flooring products can be configured in a multitude of ways, from simple sheets of a solid color, to more intricate mosaic patterns using different colors or tile sizes to form patterns.  This section is geared towards the Standard Series and the use of Wondermat® in a home or children's environment, but the information on product selection and application applies to all.

Proper product selection and installation plays a key role in the performance of Wondermat Flooring.  Besides the general product attributes presented here, review the specifics of each product line in the Catalog and look at the Installation Guide for even more advice.  We also suggest you fill out the form to Request the Free Samples so you can see the actual colors, thickness (or pattern) of the mat you are interested in BEFORE you order. 

Wondermat soft flooring is a do-it-yourself (DIY) dream product.  It's easy to measure and install over almost any floor surface and provides beauty, safety and durability at an affordable cost.  It is easier to put down than any conventional floor covering product that requires padding and special fastening techniques.  With Wondermat soft flooring, the product is the pad, and fastening (if required) is a simple matter of some double-sided carpet tape.

No tack strips, stretching, knee-kickers, grout, nails, staples, power saws or chisels required.
 

WONDERMAT INSTALLATION TYPES
Depending on your planned use, design objectives and the shape and size of your room, you have a lot of choices as to how you will proceed. Our flooring systems are completely modular and easy to work with once you understand the basics.  The Make-A-Mat Calculator makes the process fairly painless and will help you figure out the materials and cost of any project. The first concept to grasp is that there are really only two types of installations:

Area Mat

SIMPLE AREA MAT

This is the most common type of installation. A simple installation is one that works with our standard tile sizes and border systems, without cutting anything to fit. Using 1-foot tiles, you can generally get within 4-6 inches of any dimension with this type of mat installation.  Typical examples are play and exercise areas that do not completely fill a room, smaller area mats, work stations and larger installations like trade show exhibits.


Custom Fit

CUSTOM FIT MAT

A custom installation is one that must fit specific dimensions.  Anything from a wall-to-wall mat in your basement or home gym to a play room in day care center would fall into this category.  Wondermat is easy to work with, and all the information you (or your installer) need to do a professional job is right here in our Installation Guide.

 

PRODUCT SELECTION OVERVIEW

Your first step is going to be selecting the type of product you are going to use, which is generally controlled by what you are using the mat for and where it will be installed.  Most of our stocked mats are now 5/8th of an inch thick, with the exception of the Sport Series, which is 1 Inch thick.  If the mat is for comfort or general romping around (including aerobics and yoga type activities), you are probably fine with a 5/8th inch mat.  If you are looking for sport applications, or just want more absorbsion for low-height fall protection, or outdoor applications, then you should consider using the 1-Inch thick Sport Series.  For needs beyond the stocked items listed here, visit our Made-to-Order page.

Note 1: Installations in filtered or light sun, such as covered decks, patios or other shaded environments ARE feasible, but do not use Standard Series in a full sun installation for an extended period of time and expect it to last.  It's too thin, and the heat build up too high to perform well, and you may encounter warping, excessive expansion or premature deterioration of the foam surface.  Two hours a day of full sun would be the upper limit. Use the thicker Sport Series if your installation will get more sun than this. See Note 2 for color selection.

Note 2: Color Selection is important for outdoor installations.  Water will not hurt Wondermat, but the sun's UV rays will.  Mat colors will fade at different rates because of chemical differences in the pigments used for each color.  We recommend using Dark Blue, Light Blue, Dark Green, Light Green or Purple if you want the best color retention in your outdoor mats.  The other colors will work outdoors, from a foam standpoint, but the rate of fading can be quite rapid and the appearance suffers.

Note 5:  Existing inventory of 7/16 inch thick Designer Series is being sold off and replaced with the thicker 5/8 inch mats to allow the two border systems to be used with this mat Series.


 

PLAN YOUR INSTALLATION
Once you know the type of mat you are going to be putting together and have selected the product you want to use, you need to consider how you are going to lay out your mat.  Simple or complex designs aside, the first step is to figure out how much material you need to cover a given space.  Entering your desired dimensions into the Make-A-Mat Calculator makes it easy to determine the materials needed to create your mat.  If your design is simple, you can do most of your product selection from the calculator.  If your design is more complex, you should lay out your design using a piece of graph paper, count out your tiles/colors and take those values into the Catalog.

CUSTOM DESIGNS

Beyond the space you have to work with, there is no limit to the designs you can create with Wondermat soft flooring products.  With 15 colors and 3 tile sizes to work with, you can think of your installation as a large mosaic, where different color elements are placed to form a pattern. If you are covering a large area or doing a Custom Installation, measure the floor dimensions then, using a piece of graph paper, make a scale drawing of the room or area to be covered.  Include the locations of doors, cabinets or other fixtures.

Make a few copies of your scale drawing and try out different possible layouts using colored pencils.  If your mat is simple, perhaps this isn't even necessary, but if you are laying out a child's play area, a basement or a trade show exhibit, it is well worth the time to take this step.
         
   
 
Planning kids Play Areas? Be creative! THINK!
You don't have to put out a big sheet of one color or limit yourself to letters and numbers all bunched together.  Here's something to think about:  You can get two completely different looks using the same materials.  This example shows two different 8 X 10 foot installations made with the exact same parts.  Very different results; and not only do they look different, but you can imagine that each mat would be played with in a different way.
