DESIGN CENTER

Wondermat soft flooring is a do-it-yourselfers (DIY) dream product.  It's easy to measure and install over almost any floor surface and provides beauty, safety and durability at an affordable cost.  It is easier to put down than any conventional floor covering product that requires padding and special fastening techniques.  With Wondermat soft flooring, the product is the pad, and fastening (if required) is a simple matter of some good quality double-sided carpet tape.

There are no tack strips, no stretching, no knee-kickers, tile cutters, grout, power saws or chisels.

As always, a good installation begins with good planning,
so here are a few basic concepts to grasp before you get started:

There are really only two types of installations

Standard Series

AREA MAT (Simple installation)

This is the most common type of installation. A simple installation is one that works within our standard tile sizes and border system.  By using our standard tile sizes and adding and removing border tiles, it is generally possible to get within 6 inches of any dimension without having to custom cut anything.  It includes installations like play areas that do not completely fill a room, smaller area mats and larger installations like trade show exhibits.

Designer Series

CUSTOM INSTALLATION (Cutting tiles to fit)

A custom installation is one that must fit specific dimensions.  Anything from a wall-to-wall mat in your kitchen or basement to an alcove in a day care center would fall into this category. Generally speaking, you have to trim one or more sides of the mat to make it fit the exact dimensions.  See our Installation Guide for details.  Also, any professional Carpet or Tile installer should be able to install this product,

There are three basic tile sizes, and a border system:

Wondermat soft flooring products come in 3 basic tile sizes.  Our tile sizes are metric because Wondermat is sold around the world, but the three basic sizes equate closely to American standard sizes of 1 foot (30cm), 2 foot (60cm) and 3 foot (90cm)  square tiles.  Our Sport Series tiles are made to the international standard of 1 Meter, and we have an 18 inch tile size that is unique to our Designer Series.  The Borders are basically four  inches wide, with a smooth, 90 degree cut edge on one side and an interlocking edge on the other.  All the 1, 2 and 3 foot sizes interconnect with each other, so you can use all one tile size or you can mix and match them to achieve the desired design effect. It's completely modular and easy to work with.  Don't get hung up on the Metric system either.  Our Make-A-Mat Calculator will do the conversions and help you figure out how much material you will need for your project.

PLAN YOUR INSTALLATION

Proper Product Selection and installation plays a key role in the performance of Wondermat Flooring:

STEP 1: Decide on the Surface type:

With 5 basic mat types, we have a mat for every reasonable home or daycare activity imaginable.

Standard Series Our best seller!  Use it instead of carpet! Our Premium quality High Density foam mats are made with our exclusive EVA plastic formula, perfected over the last 9 years.  When quality and appearance count, nothing compares to our EZ-Clean non-slip surface.  Made with 5/8 inch (14.5mm) thick foam, this line comes in 1, 2 and 3 foot tile sizes, with 12 colors in stock. This line also includes die-cut Letters, Numbers, Symbols and over 20 different picture puzzle designs.

The standard series is an attractive, durable and safe interior design element in any children's play area, and is perfect for adult exercise areas, basements or trade show exhibits. It may be used outdoors on decks, patios, concrete or asphalt.  If using in bright sunny locations, stick to the colors Dark Blue, Dk Green, Light Green, Purple and Black.  Other colors will work outdoors, but the colors will fade at different rates.

Sport Series Our line of Thicker Sport and Safety mats for more strenuous activities like martial arts, gymnastics, tumbling, kick boxing and Tai-Bo.  Made of  3/4 and 1 inch thick foam, Our standard 1 Meter mats feature our EZ-Clean non-slip surface on TWO-SIDES, which means you can flip the entire mat over extend it's useful life and appearance.  We also make a line of 1 and 3 Foot tiles in the EZ-Clean finish and our Coated Color finish on a made to order basis.

Utility Series This is not a foam mat at all.  This is a high quality molded interlocking mat made of 50% recycled rubber and 50% PE plastic.  Each tile is one foot square and 5/8 inch thick.  This is a fall-through type mat, with support legs spaced every 1.5 inch across the bottom of the mat.  Eight different practical and attractive patterns are available if 4 different colors each.

Coated Color Series This is a special purpose mat that is designed for Indoor use in dry areas.  It's main features are a semi-gloss finish on top of the mat that makes it the easiest to clean foam mat in existence and the colors are extremely vivid.  It's a bit of a specialty mat for now, so we only stock this item in 6 colors of the  5/8 inch, 1 foot tile size.  We can make this item to order in 1, 2 and 3 foot tile sizes and a range of thickness', and you can special order any Pantone color on the surface if you need to match company or school colors. The base foam color closely matches the printed layer on this product, so this mat can maintain a respectable appearance, even in a tough environment.

Coated Designer Series This is a special purpose mat that is designed for Indoor use in dry areas.  With this mat, we take our fantastic printing technology and create foam mats that look like traditional flooring - But they're soft!  The main feature with this product line is that you get a soft floor that doesn't look like a day care center and our exclusive semi-gloss finish on top of the mat that makes it the easiest to clean foam mat in existence.  We consider this to be a specialty mat, because the base foam is white to let us control the printed colors on top of the mat.  What that means is that if the upper surface is scratched or worn off, the white color will show through.  Because of this, don't use this product in abrasive environments, unless you are prepared to replace worn tiles from time to time.  Personally, we've used the product in our home for over a year and it still looks great, but we don't wear our shoes in the house.  We have had returns from people who own pets with sharp claws, so we don't recommend this product if you have indoor pets either.

STEP 2: Plan your layout

Perhaps the best way to visualize different layouts and color combinations is by making a scale drawing of the floor you will be covering.

1.    If you are doing a simple installation, determine the approximate size that you want to cover, then go to our Make-A-Mat Calculator and enter the measurements to determine how many tiles you need to create your desired mat.

2.    If you are covering a large area or doing a Custom Installation, measure the floor dimensions then, using a piece of graph paper, make a scale drawing of the room or area to be covered.  Include the locations of doors, cabinets or other fixtures.

3.    Make a few copies of your scale drawing and try out different possible layouts using colored pencils.  If your mat is simple, perhaps this isn't even necessary, but if you are laying out a child's play area, a basement or a trade show exhibit, it is well worth the time to take this step.

STEP 3: Be creative! THINK!

This is where you select the tile sizes, colors and design that you want to implement.  You don't have to put out a big sheet of one color or limit yourself to letters and numbers all bunched together.  Here's something to think about:  You can get two completely different looks using the same materials.  This example shows two different 8 X 10 foot installations made with the exact same parts.  Very different results, and not only do they look different, but you can imagine that each mat would be played with in a different way.
