Care and Cleaning

Proper care and maintenance will help ensure your floor always looks its best.  Simply follow our maintenance and prevention steps outlined below to extend the life of your Wondermat brand products.

After Installation:

Wipe your new mat with a damp sponge, cloth, or mop to remove any residual materials that may be left on the surface of the mat after being made.

Proactive Protection for Your Floor:

Sweep or vacuum regularly to remove loose dirt which can scratch your floor.  NOTE:  We do not recommend vacuums with a beater brush unless you know there are no metal things stuck in it.  The vacuum or the brush will not hurt the floor, but if you have a paper clip spinning at 500 RPM, you will scratch the surface of the mat.

Wipe up spills as soon as possible.  If a lot of liquid was spilled, it's a good idea to remove a few tiles around the spill to ensure that no liquid has gotten under the mat.  Remove dried stains with a damp cloth and detergent or general household chemicals.  Never use highly abrasive scrubbing tools on Wondermat flooring products.  Nail polish and paint can generally be peeled off after it has dried completely.

Wash your floor regularly with a damp cloth or mop the surface with any conventional mop, making sure to absorb all the dirty water back into your mop. The best general cleaning solution is a mild dish washing soap. If you have a serious mess, you can use household chemicals such as Fantastic® or Formula 409® without damaging the mat.

Most surface stains can be removed if you act quickly.  If you have a serious mess, such as crayon, lipstick, pen ink or shoe polish, follow these instructions in order, until the stain is removed or it becomes apparent that the stain is permanent:

1. Spot clean the stain with lighter fluid, mineral spirits or turpentine using a clean white cloth.

2.  If the stain still shows, very carefully wipe the area with fingernail polish remover containing acetone (follow instructions on label) using a clean white cloth.

3.  If the stain still shows, try using rubbing alcohol (isopropyl alcohol) using a clean white cloth.

4. If the stain still shows, but is substantially gone, continue with the method above that worked best.

5. If the stain still shows a lot, try using a WHITE non-abrasive scrubbing pad and some dish soap.

CAUTION: Mineral spirits, rubbing alcohol and fingernail polish are all combustible/flammable.  Please follow the instructions on the label and make sure you thoroughly clean the Wondermat® with soap and water when you are done, especially if it will be used by a child.

Never put Wondermat® in the dish washer or washing machine. Prolonged exposure to hot water will cause the product to shrink. Beside a high risk of destroying the product itself, in all likelihood you will also damage your dish washer or washing machine.

When moving appliances or heavy furniture, remove the tiles from the floor.  Dragging heavy or sharp objects across your mat can cause scratches in the material.

Use floor protectors on furniture legs to distribute the load and reduce indentation.  Generally, the heavier the item, the wider the floor protector should be.

In a home environment, it's a good idea to remove the mat from time to time just to remove all the dust and dirt that may have accumulated under the mat.  If you find your mat moving around, it's usually because there's dirt under the mat.

Revitalize your mat:

If your flooring is getting a lot of traffic at trade shows, in a daycare center or is in an especially dusty environment, from time to time you are going to want to seriously clean your mat and bring it back to life. This procedure is for UN-COATED Standard and Sports mats.

1. Remove your mat from your home or it's storage cartons and assemble it outdoors, on a hosed-off driveway, patio or parking lot.

2. Hose down the mat with a garden hose.

3. Sprinkle some dry laundry detergent around the entire mat.  We've had good results using Tide brand detergent, but others should work as well.

4. Using a soft bristle broom or brush, work the soap around the mat.  Spread it around and give it a good scrub.  Not too hard, but work the soap in good.  Keep the mat wet so the soap doesn't dry on the mat.

5. Hose down the mat to remove ALL the soap.  Use your broom or brush to make sure you get rid of all the residual soap that may be sticking to the mat as you hose it down. This is important.

6. Break your mat apart into 2 or 3 foot sections and rinse them off one more time (both sides this time) and lean them against something so all the water can drain off and the tiles can dry.  When it's completely dry, reassemble your mat and spot clean any stains using the guidelines above.  Your mat should look great again.  If it's a Trade Show Mat, don't put it back in the box until you have given it a few days to COMPLETELY dry out.
